Saddam Hussein will stand trial for more likely 12 of about 500 charges that could be laid. The 12 cover a broad range from gassing thousands of Kurds in 1988 to executing rival political and religious leaders since the mid 1970’s. Iraqi officials want the case to concentrate on 14 thoroughly documented cases for which authorities believe they can get convictions.
